Instructions Following Wisdom Teeth (3rd Molars) Removal
Bleeding Control
Immediately after your procedure, maintain consistent pressure on the surgical site by biting down on the provided gauze until bleeding subsides. Some bleeding is normal. Change the gauze as needed until the bleeding stops.
Dizziness and Movement
For several days post-surgery, you may experience dizziness when standing. Rise slowly and give yourself time to stabilize before walking.
Physical Activity
Avoid strenuous activities for 3–4 days after your extraction. Gradually return to your routine as you feel comfortable.
Medications
Take all prescribed medications as directed. If your pain medication is not aspirin, Tylenol, or ibuprofen, avoid driving, operating machinery, or any activity that requires full alertness.
Antibiotics
If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as instructed to prevent infection.
Swelling and Cold Compress
Expect swelling and stiffness in the first 24 hours. Swelling may peak around days 2–3. Use a cold compress for up to 20 minutes on and at least 20 minutes off. After 36 hours, switch to moist heat for relief.
Avoid These Activities
For 24–48 hours after surgery, do not use straws or bottles, rinse vigorously, spit, or smoke. Avoid hot or spicy foods, carbonated drinks, and alcohol.
Diet Guidelines
Limit your diet to liquids and soft foods like soup, yogurt, juices, and smoothies for the first few days.
Oral Hygiene
Do not rinse, spit, or brush your teeth on the day of surgery. Resume gentle brushing the next day, avoiding surgical sites.
Salt Water Rinses
Begin warm salt water rinses (½ tsp salt in 8 oz water) the day after surgery, 3 times daily for 7–10 days. This helps keep the area clean and aids suture dissolution.
Irrigation Instructions
Do not use the irrigating syringe for the first 5 days. After that, gently flush the socket with warm salt water to remove debris.
Numbness
Temporary numbness of the lip, chin, or tongue may occur. Use caution while eating to avoid injury.
Dry Socket Warning
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot dislodges early. Signs include throbbing pain radiating to the ear or jaw 3–4 days post-op. Contact us if this happens.
When to Call
